Madeleine Astor was 18 years old and five months pregnant. She had recently married 47 year old John Jacob Astor and was returning from honeymooning in Europe, chosen to escape the gossip.

After Titanic struck the iceberg the Astors waited in the gymnasium while women and children were loaded into the lifeboats. John Astor did not believe that the Titanic would sink and did not approach the lifeboats until 1.45am. 

Madeleine left Titanic in lifeboat 4. Her son, John Jacob Astor V was born in August 1912.

Madeleine married two more times and died in 1940.
