Margaret (Molly) Brown aged 42 years in 1912, had married mining engineer James Brown. Brown made a fortune in the gold rush but the Browns were not accepted into society, Margaret's past being a barrier to social acceptance. Margaret had cut short a European tour to return to America to be with her grandson who was ill. She was relaxing in her cabin with a book when the Titanic hit the iceberg. Margaret was put to sea in lifeboat no.6 and when the quartermaster in charge of the boat proved a weak leader she took charge. She kept the women rowing for seven hours and kept morale high an act that earned her the nickname 'unsinkable'. She died in 1932.
