240:00 min
This definitive programme is the year by year story of WW1 which claimed the
lives of over 20 million people. From the early Germany successes at Tannenberg,
the deadlock of trench warfare and the battles of the Somme, Ypres and Cambrai,
right through to the armistice on November 11th, 1918, the full horror of the
'The War To End All Wars' comes to life.
Disc 2. The Rape of Nanking 1937
44:00 min
On December 13, 1937, Japanese troops overran the Chinese lines and occupied the
city of Nanking. It was the beginning of one of the most horrifying episodes of
the 20th century. Over 350,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed or
raped with gleeful and inventive cruelty. Eyewitnesses, scholars and historians
reflect on the legacy of this shattering event while gruesome photos help
separate fact from fiction.
Disc 3. World War II 1939-1945
130:00 min
This is an in-depth look at three of the most life-devouring and horrific
battles of WWII. The 1943 Battle of Kursk engaged the German and Russian armies
in a fierce battle that raged for 50 days. The Omaha Beach landings during D-Day
resulted in wholesale slaughter as machine guns and mortar fire ripped apart the
Allied troops. The Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 was Hitler's last major
offensive and became one of the fiercest conflicts of WWII.
Disc 4. The Korean War 1950-1953
100:00 min
On June 25, 1950, the North Korean army invaded South Korea, violating a truce
struck at the end of World War II. It initiated a conflict that would bring the
U.S., China and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. Our Time in Hell
tells the story of the Korean War with newsreels, original archive footage and
extensive interviews with American soldiers.
Disc 5. The Suez Crisis 1956 + The Bay of Pigs 1961
44:00 min
When Egypt nationalised the Suez Canal in 1956, the British government assumed
that they would enjoy international support to retake it. But they faced global
opposition and their ignominious retreat marked the end of imperial Britain.
In April 1961, 1300 Cuban exiles, backed by the Kennedy administration, landed
in the Bay of Pigs. Their mission was to overthrow Fidel Castro's government but
the assault was a disaster and the subsequent Cuban Missile Crisis brought the
world to the brink of nuclear war.
Disc 6. Vietnam 1954-1975
270:00 min
This is story of America's most brutal modern day conflict. Known as the 10,000
Day War, Vietnam was a fierce battle fought in the harshest conditions.
America's ill-conceived plan to crush the communist north and their disastrous
miscalculation that it would be a decisive victory, meant that the conflict
dragged on for over 20 years.
Disc 7. The Six Day War 1967 + The Falklands War 1982
44:00 min
Egyptian President Nasser rallied the Arab world behind a single goal, the
destruction of Israel. Arab forces surrounded the tiny country but Israeli
leader, Moshe Dayan, attacked first and decimated Egypt's forces driving them
back to the Suez.
When Argentinean forces invaded the British occupied Falkland Islands, its
leaders completely miscalculated Margaret Thatcher's resolve and two months
later were forced to surrender.
Disc 8. Desert Storm 1990-1991
70:00 min
In February 1991, 700,000 Coalition troops surged forward to attack more than
half a million Iraqi soldiers deeply entrenched in Kuwait. This programme
presents the United States as a gambler with an untried system who went into a
winner-take-all game against Saddam Hussein's army.
