On the dry African plains, a pride of lions stalks an unwary zebra. The cheetah, by contrast, hunts in the open, relying upon its skill as a sprinter to outrun the Thompson's gazelle. The leopard favours a third strategy. Lurking high in a thorn tree, it waits for the chance to leap from its branch onto the neck of an impala, grazing below. These big cats are key players in the saga of life and death on the African plains.

Rarely seen even by those who have made a life’s work of their study, the great wild cats of the New World are creatures of mystery whose ways are shrouded in myth. The jaguar, the ocelot, the puma, the bobcat, the lynx – they prowl our jungles, mountains and deserts seeking their prey. But few who have gone looking for these cats have seen more than mere tracks in the earth or shadows in the dappled light of the forest.

DISC THREE The Lion’s Share

In a western corner of Tanzania’s Serengeti, there is a paradise ruled by lions. It is called Moru and for Africa's king of cats this golden land is the ultimate inheritance. The pride is the core of lion society, consisting of female relatives and their cubs, guarded by one or more male lions. This programme shows how the sisterhood copes with its neighbours, deals with male suitors, raises its cubs and tackles its prey.
