Thomas Edward Lawrence, the second of five illegitimate sons, was educated at
Oxford and, from an early age, was fascinated by archaeology. At the beginning of 1914 he took part in an expedition to
Sinai where he became fluent in Arabic and developed a deep sympathy for the
Arabs who lived under Turkish rule.
In June 1916, after 400 years of oppression, the Arabs began a revolt throughout the
Arabian Peninsula to gain independence from the Ottoman
Empire. The British supported the uprising with arms, money and the presence of 27 year old military intelligence officer
Captain T. E. Lawrence. He proved an inspirational leader and highly skilled at guerrilla warfare in the desert wasteland of
Arabia. For over two years he was the guiding force behind the
Arab Revolt which would change the face of the Middle East forever. His meeting with
American journalist Lowell Thomas made him an international hero and inspired the legendary film,
Lawrence of Arabia
Drawing on accounts of Lawrence’s literary masterpiece, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, as well as insight from historians and authors, this is the incredible story of one of the most talented and enigmatic figures of the twentieth century.
