The wonderfully evocative photographs in this book explore leisure time from the early days of photography in the 1860s up to the mid-20th century. Encompassing a mix of sports, traditional fetes and fairs, the circus, cinema and theatre-going, fancy dress, a quiet drink at the pub and other hobbies, holidays and pastimes, these pictures show the new-found pleasures of a nation breaking free from the constraints of work and beginning to enjoy itself.

These photographs seem to recored a simpler age. Most, if not all, of the activities illustrated are still practised today but they now have to compete with new, often computer-based ways of having fun. Changes in fashion can be seen in the images too, as attitudes to dress and clothing became increasingly casual. These pictures really do reflect 'the way we were'.
