Presented by martin Henfield Manchester through the ages takes the viewer on an historical journey through events that are sometimes violent, brilliant, innovative, ingenious, turbulent - Manchester is a city with a history written in blood, sweat, tears and triumph…
Starting in roman times the story continues through the turbulent years of the English civil war, bonnie prince Charlie, the battle of Peterloo, the slaughter of the pals battalions on the fields of France during the First World War.
At the same time the programme charts the rise of Manchester as the industrial power-house of Europe.
Two hundred years ago, Manchester was the cradle of the industrial revolution that changed the world and the city paid a price. In some ways it’s still paying that price, but its willingness to change and embrace new ideas, new industries and new technologies has put it back at the forefront of Europe in the 21st century.
The sporting heritage of the city is also examined. The achievements of Manchester city and united have made them among the best teams in Europe. Old Trafford is also a home for international cricket - a field that has seen dreams fulfilled and dashed in equal measure.
