They were immortalised forever as figures of amusement in TV's 'Dad Army', but when Hitler's troops prepared to invade our shores in 1940, the population of Great Britain slept easier knowing the newly formed Home Guard were their eyes and ears.
'This is a war of unknown warriors' said Winston Churchill of the part-time band of citizens who were prepared to fight and die for their country, many of whom were survivors of the Great War.
When they were finally disbanded in 1944, the Home Guard were over a million strong and trained to a professional standard.
This DVD pays tribute to those men through archive recordings, clips from 'Dad's Army', still images, feature film footage and personal reminiscences showing why, though the invasion never came, the Home Guard were forever assured of the nation's gratitude.
