The Roman Empire was the first great empire in Europe. Though established by military conquest, the Empire's provinces were offered the benefits of Roman civilisation. Many conquered Europeans however, refused the offer - they preferred their freedom, their own way of life, and were willing to fight and die for them.

None of the lands they conquered gave the Romans as much trouble as Palestine. Their head-on clash with its Jewish inhabitants was the stuff of great drama. For the Jews it ended in tragedy... For the Romans, it was a salutary lesson in how fiercely their dominance could be defied.
