The American Civil War defined the modern American nation. It was a war where brother fought brother and families were torn apart over their loyalties. Abraham Lincoln's victory in the 1860 presidential election triggered South Carolina's secession from the Union. The Civil War was essentially a battle over whether slavery should be abolished, with the Southern states believing that this would be ruinous to their economy.

The generals of the Civil War – Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee – are legends of military history and this six hour programme details the major turning points and battles of the war. Although the majority of the 600,000 fatalities were due to disease, the war was one of the bloodiest in American history as generals struggled to adapt the old methods of waging war to the new weapons available.
