He was one of the most powerful men to have ever lived. His boundless ambition resulted in the building of the Great Wall and united the whole of China while his obsessions with his own mortality drove him to build a temple protected by 7,000 Terracotta Warriors. This is the story of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang Di.
In 1974 peasants who were digging for a well came across fragments of ancient statues, tantalising hints of a glorious past. What was uncovered became front page news around the world. The Terracotta Warriors are a life-sized battle ready garrison made over two thousand years ago. There are infantry carrying real weapons, war chariots, horses, high ranking officers and lowly foot soldiers. What is most remarkable is that the head of each warrior is unique in facial expression, hairstyle and age. But what drove the Emperor to build an entire army to protect him in the afterlife? Why would he commission the building of a wall so vast that, even today, no one knows how long it really is?
This documentary charts the Emperor’s life from when he became King of Chinn, through his despotic reign, military conquests and finally his decline into madness and death.
