"My dear friends, this is your hour,. This is not
victory of a party or of any class. It's a victory of
the great British nation as a whole. We were the first
in this ancient island to draw the sword against
tyranny" Winston Churchill 8th May 1945
On the 8th May 1945, the dark clouds of war were at last
lifted from over Great Britain.
At 3 o'clock on that memorable day, Winston Churchill's
speech to an expectant nation finally confirmed that
victory in Europe was won and six long years of war were
finally at an end.
Introduced by Windsor Davies, this DVD features the
unique spirit of the occasion, which is recaptured by
the unforgettable music of the war years, through the
golden memories of those who were there. The programme
also features remarkable footage of performances by
great entertainers who kept the country singing during
its darkest days - Gracie Fields, George Formby and
Flanagan and Allen. Finally extensive newsreel footage,
specially filmed reconstructions and contemporary images
combine to provide the perfect flavour of the times.
With music melodies and memories provided by Don Mather
and the Miller Men, the Nostalgics and the Melody
Makers, this DVD is an opportunity to experience the joy
of a heady early summer's day over fifty years ago.
It was the day peace finally arrived. It was Victory in
Europe Day 1945
