Disc 1 Masters of the Skies
British ace Albert Ball was the Allies' best known flyer of the Great War. He
was one of the first members of the Royal Flying Corps but, on 7th May 1917, he
would depart for his last flight. Whilst engaged in a ferocious dogfight with
the Germans, he was shot down and never seen again. With an unprecedented 80
confirmed kills during WWI, Manfred von Richthofen was the scourge of the skies.
Now, military and aviation historians reveal what made the Red Baron so
effective, reliving his astounding exploits.
Disc 2 Air, Land & Sea Technology of WWI
The first bombing aeroplanes, the earliest tanks, submarines and the first
large-scale use of chemical weapons. When Industrial-Age technology and war
first mixed on a large scale, the end result was ruthlessly efficient
destruction. World War One epitomised the dark underbelly of the industrial
revolution and decimated an entire generation of soldiers.
Disc 3 Mata Hari
Her name is synonymous with mystery, seduction, betrayal and duplicity. Yet Mata
Hari's fate at the hands of a French execution squad may have been undeserved.
From her childhood in the Netherlands and her heyday as the toast of Paris to
her trial and execution, explore the true story hidden behind her legend.
Disc 4 Clash of Warriors - Haig vs Ludendorff
The German offensive on the Western Front in 1918 was the country's last great
gamble of WWI. The crucial opening phase would hit the British Expeditionary
Force and pit Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig against General Erich Ludendorff.
The success or failure of the campaign would prove to be as much about the
character and experience of the commanders as it was about their strategies,
tactics and the quality of their men.
Disc 5. Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme was one of the bloodiest and controversial conflicts
ever fought and resulted in the death of 300,000 men. Filmed on the battlefield
itself, in laboratories and on firing ranges, archaeologists, military
historians and other experts investigate all the factors that culminated in the
most catastrophic bloodbath in the history of the British Army.
Disc 6. Battle of Verdun
Verdun would go down in history as one of the most sinister battles ever fought.
The German General Eric von Falkenhayn waged a war of attrition with only one
objective in mind...to kill the enemy. The scale of slaughter was unimaginable
but there were also acts of incredible bravery. What happened in this small
French city determined the course of the war and symbolised France's will to
resist.
Disc 7. Disaster of the Dardanelles & The Battle of Cambrai
Germany's Hindenburg Line was considered unbreakable. But a strategy was devised
to penetrate the barricade with a barrage of tanks. General Douglas Haig's
successful charge changed the tank's role in combat forever.
Gallipoli will be remembered as the worst planned operation of WWI. It was the
first and only amphibian operation of the war but a lack of communication,
sickness and extreme weather meant that the campaign ended in disaster.
Disc 8. Tunnel Raiders
Stalemate on the Western Front produced a new breed of soldier who fought deep
underground using shovels, picks and explosives. The idea was simple. Tunnel to
a spot directly beneath the enemy, set mines or other explosives and blow up the
ground on which they stood. Known as sappers, they were every trench soldier's
worst nightmare.
