The Song They Sang at Santiago

Way down in far off Cuba our gallant boys so true,
They showed the coward Spaniards a Yankee trick or two,
And taught the Dons to honor the old red white and blue,
The emblem of the free, the flag of right,
They captured Santiago that didn't take them long,
Their aim was good while shooting no shots of theirs went wrong,
And as they marched to victory they sang this old time song
There'll be a hot time in Cuba tonight.

[chorus]
They bravely battled with the foeman,
And as their voices rang,
Our gallant Maine was well remembered
And avenged while they loudly sang,
The strains of unforgotten music won
For them the deadly fight;
For an old time song that carried them along
'Twas the song they sang at Santiago.

They sang Star Spangled Banner and Yankee Doodle Do,
May God save dear old Ireland and Dixie through and through,
The girl I left behind me and lots of others too,
Was what they sang with all their strength and might,
But one song of all others so loud and clearly rang,
And all the foeman trembled to hear the song they sang,
As onward to the victory our gallant heroes sprang
There was a hot time in Cuba that night.

[repeat chorus]
