NBC Red
News Program
December
7, 1941, 11:00 pm EST
0:00 Program introduction: NBC will have microphones in place tomorrow
at noon for President Roosevelt's speech before
a joint session of congress. 0:39 H.R. Baukhage in Washington: Baukhage just finished asking questions of cabinet members and congressional leaders after their meeting at the White House with the president. Republicans and Democrats are united and say things like "there are no politics here." It's not certain whether or not the president will ask for a declaration of war. 3:30 News Bulletin: Air raid on Singapore caused slight damage and some casualties. 3:43 Robert St. John Reporting: Much has happened in the ten hours since the bombs fell on Pearl Harbor. Many countries have declared war on Japan. Nicaragua declared war on Japan. Mexico will consider a war declaration tomorrow. The U.S. will consider a declaration tomorrow after Roosevelt speaks at 12:30. War Department is still estimating 104 dead and 300 wounded. No confirmation of attack on Manila, or that Wake Island has been taken over. News on Shanghai. The entire nation is solidified. Tomorrow legislation will be proposed to allow the use of the National Guard outside the western hemisphere. |

John Vandercook Commentary: The military
tactics of the Japanese are still hard to
understand. Since the attack was launched
by 1 or 2 aircraft carriers, it must have
been limited in scope. America has had 50
years to fortify Pearl Harbor to make it the
most powerful maritime fortress in the world.
It would be impossible to put it out of business
by an air attack. Hickam Field too is huge
and well fortified. The only explanation is
that Japan is blindly confident, blindly afraid.
The attack was a distraction. This is all
one war. Therefore, the German must have had
influence on Japan. The Germans hope that
defeating Japan will use up our resources
12:55 Official Bulletin: that Japanese landed in North Malaya. Japanese aircraft carrier has been sunk. Only two bombs fell in the center of Singapore. 13:25: John Vandercook Commentary: Japan is now at war with a large percentage of the world's population. |
