Navy Salute from Camels, with Jack Benny

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm really honored to give this salute from the makers of Camels to the United States Navy, but for awhile I was puzzled too. I asked some of my friends in the navy what words anyone could say that would stand up to the day-in and day-out battle of the Atlantic--Makasser Strait, the Coral Sea, Midway, and the Battle of the Solomons.

You know what they said? They said send your salute to the men and women on the jackhammers and the drill presses and the turret blade. Tell'em that those are their battle stations. There is where they meet the enemy. Don't give us words, the navy said, give us ships and planes, give us guns and shells. There'll be time for words and cheering when victory comes, and our ships are riding in Tokyo Bay. Now there's time for work, and only for work. You're doing a great job, keep it going.

That's the kind of navy you've got Americans. Let's back'em up with everything we have. Thanks and good night.
