Congressman Henry Jackson (D-WA)
On the H-Bomb Plan
February 1, 1950

The President's decision yesterday, to set into motion the development of the hydrogen bomb, a decison to which there seems little alternative, has placed us on a knife-edge of history. We are now faced with the greatest test to which Democratic government has ever been put. This may be the last opportunity the statesman will have to catch up with the scientist. This may be our last chance to avoid a third world war.
