The Iron Curtain Has Parted

Performed by Don Windle
Recorded 1953
Written by Jimmy Rule

A big silvery plane headin’ homeward
The six powerful engines they roared
But they could not be heard for the shouting
For prisoners of war were aboard

At last they’ve been given their freedom
That they had longed for so long
And as they came in for a landing
Each man in his heart sang this song

Thank God the Iron Curtain has parted
And I am a prisoner no more
I now can enjoy home and freedom
That never meant so much before
And when I’m home with my loved ones
‘Twill surely be Heaven to me
I’ll pray for the boys left behind me
‘Til each mother’s son is set free

They all had been prisoners together
The Reds had been cruel, it’s true
They had suffered from pain and from hunger
Their days had been lonesome and blue

Thank God the Iron Curtain has parted
And I am a prisoner no more
I now can enjoy home and freedom
That never meant so much before
And when I’m home with my loved ones
‘Twill surely be Heaven to me
I’ll pray for the boys left behind me
'Til each mother’s son is set free
