This section covers the post-war era, including the return of French colonialism, the First Indochina War between the Viet Minh and France, the disaster at Dien Bien Phu, the Geneva Accords, and the decision by President Eisenhower to support Ngo Dinh Diem's Republic of Vietnam with military advisors.

President Kennedy escalated the U.S. presence in Vietnam and embarked on a failed campaign to win over the hearts and minds of the rural peasant population. Meanwhile, Diem's corruption and oppression brought him into conflict with Vietnam's Buddhists, and ultimately led to his downfall. This section ends with the deaths of Diem and Kennedy in the fall of 1963.

Upon taking office following Kennedy's death, President Johnson made the fateful decision to escalate the war in Vietnam. This section covers the years of escalation, from the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 through the 1968 election.
