Abraham Lincoln is one of the most famous presidents of the United States, having led the country through its bloodiest war and through great political crisis. During his rule, Lincoln has modernized the economy, strengthened the government and abolished slavery.

Locations of Birth and Early Childhood

On February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln on the Sinking Spring Farm in Hardin County, Kentucky, south of Hodgenville. The family lived there until he was two years old, when they moved to the Knob Creek Farm in the same area. His father, Thomas Lincoln owned several farms, horses, livestock and properties by the time Abraham was born and was considered to be quite rich, but in 1816 he lost all of his land because there were issues with the property titles. The family decided to move to Indiana, across the Ohio River (now Spencer County) to make a new start.

Log Cabin

Abraham Lincoln is said to have been born in a small, one room log cabin. This cabin was dismantled somewhere before 1865 and, according to local tradition, the logs were used to construct a nearby house. In 1894, A.W. Dennet purchased the farm and used the logs from this house to, yet again, build a similar log cabin to what Lincoln was born in. This cabin has been dismantled and reconstructed several times as part of an exhibition. It is unlikely that these logs were from Lincoln’s birth cabin, but they were used to place a cabin in the Memorial Building on the Lincoln farm for visitors to view.
